Hurricanes and Tropical Storms

Tropical storms and hurricanes result in floods and mudslides.  Therefore tropical storms can cause more damage depending on how long they are on land. 

Fifi, pictured at right, hit Guatemala in 1974 as a tropical storm destroying over 70% of its banana crop.

Storms in the past 100 years:

Guatemala = 16 tropical storms, 1 hurricane.  Honduras = 13 tropical storms, 9 hurricanes.

El Salvador = 3 tropical storms, 1 hurricane.  Nicaragua = 12 tropical storms, 12 hurricanes.
