The Learning Community
Program Transition Project -- 2001-2002
Suggestions Welcomed

An invitation to participate:

Since its inception thirty years ago, The Learning Community has existed as a one-of-a-kind model of public school innovation. The results of three decades of personal caring, hands-on research and inquiry, and global service by members of The Learning Community have been phenomenal. The students' achievements and the contributions of the program have been recognized through numerous awards bestowed on its founder and director, Dr. Gary Bacon. Over the years, Dr. Bacon has accepted the awards of this recognition on behalf of the students, whose efforts and dedication made these awards possible:
Los Altos High School Teacher of the Year,
Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District Master Teacher,
Santa Clara County Teacher of the Year,
Bay-Area School Masters Award,
California Teacher of the Year finalist,
Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, and
Kohl International Teacher Award.
Dr. Bacon has decided to retire at the end of the 2001-2002 school year. Passing the torch to a new teacher will not be a simple matter. The unique process of education and the curriculum of The Learning Community are as complex as they are effective. Therefore the students are brainstorming ways to ensure an effective transition. You are invited to participate in this process by sharing your ideas with us.
