After what may have seemed like an eternity to the Swift children, their little piece of the Nineteenth Century ended. The insular lifestyle of farm life was about to be supplanted by a new era of accelerated change as people flocked to
industrialized cities. In the first decade of the twentieth Century, Essie would marry Lew Peters; Mary would meet and marry Tom; and the other children would come of age and move on to city life.
