In the 1930s, my dad's aunt worked in an upholstery factory in Oakland, CA. She was permitted to take scraps of uphostery material home from which she and her sisters made many quilts. I am fortunate to own those quilts. She also left a big roll of patchwork material that she and her sisters had sown together from the uphostery scraps, but never got around to making into a quilt. I found that roll of material recently in my garage and used it to uphoster two Ottomans that I had made. We also used the material to cover a window seat and assorted pillows. The spirit of my grandmother and her sisters live on in our living room (we even have the Treadle Sewing Machine that was used to make the patchwork quilts.
